Death registration
PLEASE NOTE: Government legislation that allowed us to take death registrations by telephone has changed, therefore all appointments now need to be undertaken in person in our office.
By law you must register a death within five calendar days unless the Coroner is investigating.
The death cannot be registered until the doctor or hospital provides a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) or, if the Coroner is involved, the relevant paperwork has been provided to us directly. Please do not book an appointment unless you have been notified that all of the relevant documents have been received and approved by the register office.
The closest relative MUST register the death (unfortunately statute does not regard an unmarried partner as a relative).
Documents for the relative registering the death, as well as the deceased, may be requested to show names and addresses to prevent any errors; you may be asked to complete a pre-registration form and attach this to your appointment.
Deaths occurring at the Milton Keynes University Hospital will be registered with us. However if the death occurred at home, or elsewhere in Milton Keynes, please check that the exact location is within the Milton Keynes registration district. Deaths must be registered in the district that they occur but as some addresses with a Milton Keynes postcode are not included within our district it is best to check.
